I agree with you in a sense but the problem with music is simply the attitude of the buying public. Everyone is quick to blame record companies but a lot of it has to do with how people treat music today as well.
Older music from the 60s, 70s and 80s had less to compete with. They could write their own songs and have more creative control. Now with the whole American Idol mentality and the internet, things have become dumbed down.
I'm sure there are some great artists somewhere but they won't be able to get noticed the way things are now.
