Morrissey was released from a British hospital on Sunday after falling ill during a show the night before and being rushed from the venue in an ambulance. The 50-year-old former Smiths frontman was taken to a hospital in the southern English town of Swindon on Saturday when he collapsed on stage and suffered breathing difficulties, according to the Reuters.

Morrissey: A Career Retrospective

"Morrissey became unwell last night. He was admitted overnight as a precautionary measure," a spokesperson said on Sunday morning. "He was seen this morning and was much improved and has now been discharged." The singer's representatives did not reveal any further information on the medical emergency or what caused it.

According to the Sunday Telegraph, he began the show by saying, "Good evening ... probably," before playing the Smiths' 1983 classic, "This Charming Man" at the Oasis Leisure Centre. At the conclusion of that tune, Morrissey (born Steven Patrick Morrissey) knelt down, then fell to the floor and was carried off the stage by members of his band. It was the latest of more than half a dozen cancellations this year of dates in support of the singer's Years of Refusal album, including the four opening dates of the tour in Florida in February and March, also reportedly due to illness.

At Saturday's show, fans stood around for half an hour before a venue representative announced that Morrissey was seriously ill and had left the building.

Eyewitnesses told the Telegraph that the typically swoony, dramatic singer appeared to be "straining" to perform the opening song and was "wincing" as it came to a close, sagging to his knees as it ended and slumping to the stage.

Monday night's show at Bournemouth Academy in England has been canceled on doctor's advice, according to the singer's Web site.
